Avera Health's Views on Reporting Clinical Denial Trends

Brittany Roth, Executive Director of Revenue Integrity and Quality Improvement, offers advice for communicating clinical denial trends and other revenue cycle metrics with clinicians.

Any tip for improving how clinical denials trends are reported to clinician leaders?

Britanny Roth: “One thing that we're really focusing on at Avera Health is to make sure that our clinical leaders feel supported (by revenue cycle). We help them understand where they're sitting from a financial and a revenue cycle performance perspective by sharing data in such a way that they’re looking at only one report instead of trying to piece together different reports.

And so we do this by way of executive dashboards. We start out at a C-suite level and work our way through our regional presidents and to our clinical leaders on the ambulatory side. With our clinical leaders, we like for them to have a complete picture of their financial KPIs, as well as first-pass denials, write-offs, charity care, etc., so that they really have a good understanding of where they're sitting and also where they can help partner with us (in revenue cycle) to reduce denials. Because a lot of what happens with our denials really does start from front-end (processes). And so that's just one of the ways that we are working with our clinical leaders out of Avera Health.”
